DOWN & CONNOR - THE CRISIS

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

BISHOP NOEL TREANOR, THE BISHOP OF DOWN AND CONNOR IS LIKE A HOUSEHOLDER WHOSE METAL SPOUTING AND DOWNPIPES ARE ROTTEN AND CRACKED - AND WHO INSTEAD OF TOTALLY REPLACING THEM IS TRYING TO FIX REGULAR LEAKS WITH CELOTAPE AND POLYFILLER.

And, as every householder will tell you this way of dealing with rotten guttering is very bad for the whole house - causing constant leaks and rot and eventually undermining the integrity of the building.

He obviously realised that when he spent between 1 and 4 million pounds on renovating his episcopal palace of Lisbreen.

Why does it not realise it when it comes to renewing and safeguarding the Body of Christ - the church in the diocese of Down and Connor.

When it comes to the fabric of the Body of Christ he is prepared to limp from scandal to scandal, from revelation to revelation, with regard to his clergy.

There are those who say that Noel Treanor overwhelmed and semi-paralysed at the state of the diocese he inherited from Paddy "Sniff" Walsh ten years ago in 2008 and that he is longing for retirement in 8 years time.

Some say that he is appalled at what he has read in the clergy files that are only read by the bishop.

Others say that before he took over there was an industrial type of shredding done at Lisbreen - to prevent Treanor seeing even worse.

At present Treanor is dealing with:

1. Historic abuse cases.

2. The cases of priests who are cruising gay cruising sites in places like the Giant's Ring in Belfast, the sand dunes on the North Coast and various public toilets.

3. The case of a priest who has been supplying oral sex to truck drivers and other passersby on the A1 dual carriageway.

4. The cases of priests living with their partners - both male and female.

5. The cases of priests being absent and not living in their parish.

Just to mention a few....................

This whole situation cannot and should not be dealt with on a scandal by scandal basis with the truth having to be dragged out of the bishop and the diocese on each occasion.

This crisis is a SYSTEMIC CRISIS and it must be dealt with in a whole and systemic manner.

And it's not only Down and Connor that has such a crisis.

Every diocese in Ireland, to a greater or lesser extent, has the same crisis.

Recent events in Dromore show the depth of the crisis there - a crisis that dates back 40 years at least.

The Irish Catholic Bishops need to realise and say that the whole system is broken. They need to be publicly open about this with the Irish people and indeed with the Vatican.

The seminaries too are totally dysfunctional.

The crisis has a massive sexual dimension as well as moral, social, disciplinary dimensions.

The first step in addressing such a big problem is the acknowledgement of the problem and its size.

When will Noel Treanor and his colleagues admit that the Church Titanic has already hit a towering iceberg?

  1. Is Bishop Trainor paralysed, Bishop Pat? By fear I mean. Has he been panicked into inertia?

You allude to a number of cases. One in particular is well known - a priest who doesn’t live in his parochial house but who lives with his boyfriend several miles away. “The dogs in the streets” know about this man’s lifestyle as he has been seen in places in Belfast where no true priest would think of going. His face book page which he tries to hide by using a makey up name (unsuccessfully) has “pro-gay” postings on it. (Nothing wrong with being pro-gay but he is called to be a celibate priest). There are many other issues with this man’s downright nastiness and rudeness to people in the parish he doesn’t live in. The parish secretary runs the parish and calls him if there is an emergency. He parachutes in and out. It’s the talk of the town.

Does Bishop Trainor think that won’t explode eventually?

    1. Why, then, do the stupid sheep of this priest's parish continue to support financially the likes of this man and of Noel Treanor?

There comes a point when the lay sheep (baaaaa) of Down on Connor have to accept THEIR responsibility for the behaviour of these Christ-betrayers. STOP FEEEDING THESE INDOLENT BASTARDOS WITH YOUR CASH.

    2. You don't convince me at all @ 23.59...Is your "priest" a figment of your imagination?
I think if you were describing a real situation, you are the sort of person who have taken satisfaction in giving the real details, chapter and verse.. But you can't.

    3. @13:16 - no figment of anyone’s imagination. He’s very real and it’s an open secret. Are you him or one of his pals? He has a neck like a jockey’s bollocks. Totally shameless.

    5. Bastardo Carta at 11:01 - people are supporting their Parish which will be there long after that priest is gone. We have had wonderful priests in our Parish down through the years. We are also sick and tired listening to your tedious and perpetual bleating. P*ss off for once in your life and give our heads peace.

    7. 16.06 - found this explanation of “neck like a jockeys bollox” online: “I am told this comes from the observation that, as racing saddles lack padding, a jockey’s nethers must develop a steel-like resilience to withstand the tortures of the race. Perhaps this is why so many jockeys ride standing high in their stirrups?”

Why did they not finish the course, they got their useless arses kicked out the door being deemed unsuitable and not fit for purpose. 10. @17:13 - you would need to have known MC in Maynooth, back in the day, to understand how very sad it all is - both him personally - and his circumstances/background.

He’s a very sad wee man you see. And he illustrates perfectly the adage: “hurt people hurt people”. This very hurt little person lashes out, with venom, against all and sundry - especially priests.

Also, sad to say, his liberal usage of the “divil’s buttermilk” is case book stuff. It’s sad, like I said, but predictable, given his history.

Someday, please God, he will have the courage to embrace his past and come, as it were, out of the closet.

In the meantime, a wounded thing must hide. He’s like a poor little kitten with a thorn in its paw.

Grant him a fool’s pardon and treat his tantrums with all the seriousness you would the fury of a three-year-old. Above all - pray for him.

    1. EDITED

Bishop Treanor needs to come clean about Hugh Kennedy, Xxxx xxxxxxx John McCallum, xxx Xxxx xxx xxx, Danny Curran, the homosexually active, PP's. He needs to fully investigate Vincent McKinley, Charlie Agnew, Thomas Cunningham, xxx xxx xxx xxx. There is also a story about a prominent PP who raped a nun that has been doing the rounds for years. Look at the diocesan colleges of St Malachy (physical and emotional abuse, Paddy Walsh and co) and St MacNissi‘s, Garron Tower, (sexual, physical and emotional abuse - e.g. Fr Agnew beating young boys on their bare backsides!) Do something about the serving PP's and the Giant’s Ring (its not hard to make the connections on that one and the temporary removal of a priest, in Xxxx xxxx, in the past, for untoward activities.

    2. You think that would be a solution! Unbelievably naive...

  4. I’d be surprised if the Bishop didn’t know about the strange lifestyle of the priest concerned. So when the shit hits the fan, as it will undoubtedly, then he cannot plead “I didn’t know’’
Quite frankly Pat I’ve come to the conclusion that the church in Ireland is so strapped for priests and vocations that it is prepared to turn a blind eye to these guys in order to cover the work!
It’s increasingly apparent that St Patrick missed some of the serpents. Sad really.

  5. Notwithstanding the horrific historical child abuse scandals, I am not sure what the bishop, any bishop, can do about typical closet gay type behaviour of D&C priests and seminarians described above.

Despite the popularity of apps like Grindr, there will always be priestly bush-bunnies, peep-freaks, and truck-stop-sluts in the diocese of D&C.

  6. It's sad that according to this blog in general the church is so preoccupied with sexuality and the negative fallout related to it. Talking is abit like low dose medicine. Eventually it looses effect. It's time to go to next level whatever that is.

    1. Sean, it very apparent that bloggers just want to talk and criticise and they are not (for the most part) interested on real solutions and improvements. If there is no scandal on the blog for a rare day or two , the posters actually write in, clamouring for it. Many examples of that....

      Delete
    2. 13.22 I don't that is really true. What people cannot see is a hopeful way forward if there is not reparation done by the church for cover up and looking the other way on abuse. People here talk of continued evil in the church, I feel, because those in authority in the church seem to want to gloss over it and leave it in the past without actually dealing with it. Very few contributors here clamour for scandal.

    3. Sorry @ 23.26

  7. If this is what is happening in Down and Connor, there should be a full reveal of what is happening in every diocese in Ireland. Why should all this be kept a secret from the loyal parishioners who not only support their parish and diocese by attending mass/services, but also by their constant weekly financial support at the weekend collections. I think Pat, you should have a diocese by diocese reveal of issues/matters that need to be addressed in each diocese. Only then will the scale of corruption, cruelty and disgrace will be revealed to the parishioners, their eyes will at last be opened. It comes down now to trust. I personally do not trust any Roman Catholic priest, whether he be Bishop or curate. I had a chat with a curate I have known in my diocese last week. It was the first time that when I was talking to him, I felt, I do not trust you any more. I have known him 12 years, but all the trust has now gone. He may be the kind, warm hearted priest I have know, but now, I simply can not trust any of them. How times have changed.

    1. 11.32: The "trust" is as much your issue as it is the overall image portrayed of priests. I have many friends - after 20/30/40 years, I have reason at times not to trust their bona fide any longer. Trust works both ways and your comment is sweepingly unfair and offensive. Did you tell your priest "friend"?

      Delete
    2. John King @ 11.32 wow, what a major sweeping statement that you don’t trust any Catholic Priest!!! I am sure Magna Carta will eventually back you up on this at some point today, however, he is still in his pit after a night of drunken stupor and will arise shortly to verbally abuse everyone all over again.

We know you have been very vocal in your opposition in the past to the parish of round tower in Derryand the Derry diocese in general. If you don’t trust Priests then why do you attempt to engage them in conversation? Why go to Mass at all? You are just one of them miserable whingers that every Parish dreads and every parish has them. Never satisfied, never happy, always moaning. The laity got sick of you in the end trying to draw us in on your petty squabbles let alone the Clergy. We are well aware of what a negative influence you have been. The whole of Derry seems to know you. Trouble maker is all they say.

    3. Yes, I was brutally honest. It was after a Mass at the weekend, and we were talking about the mess which was discussed and revealed on the Nolan Show on the BBC. He said to me that he has been told by men, women, parents, grandparents that they have lost trust in all priests. He was saddened by that, but understands in his words "the evil of a few has ruined the trust parishioners have in the many of us who are faithful servants of God".

      Delete
    4. Nothing was revealed on The Nolan Show. It was already revealed on the Spotlight programme before Nolan. You have lost trust in all Priests because of sexual abuse!!! Let’s just be logical about your illogical statement. That means you have also lost trust in all Fathers, Mothers, Uncles, Cousins, Grandparents, Teachers, Neighbours who have statistically abused more than Priests. Hello!!!!

      Delete
    5. I see now you are someone who if a child came to you and said a priest had sexually abused them you would accuse them of lying. I see the mentality from your comments that priests are put on a pedestal and are there to be worshipped and adored and can do no wrong. I am just stating my thoughts, and after a discussion with a local priest, he even said himself trust is lost and can never be returned 100% because of the evil actions of some. With regards to my relatives, that I trust them as much as I have always done, because I do not put them on a pedestal and think they are Christ on earth, as the Catholic church regards them to be, just because they can transform paste bread and grape wine into the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ. I see that I will never get through to you the ending of trust, and I leave you here, as I do not want to waste my time or your time, where we will be going in circles. God Bless You.

  17. Is there any chance of keeping a sense of perspective on this? There are over 1,500 people on the sex offenders register in Northern Ireland. As priest convictions make headlines and are searchable online I'd be amazed if there were more than ten ex-clerics on the register. The same cases come up again and again e.g. Donaghy.

In Fermanagh, for example there are 35 on the register but as far as I know the only priest conviction was that of Fr Jack McCabe.

And no, I'm not an enabler, an excused or a priest. What the did was wicked, criminal and a mortal sin but we can't have lynch mobs or every priest being suspect while 1,500 lay peeves live in the community with none of this scrutiny.
